Attorney and journalist Tim H. Lan has practiced business law, tax law, and accounting, including income taxation, real property taxation, state and local taxation, and estate, gift, and generation skipping transfer tax planning and compliance for the last 20 years. Born in Taiwan, he grew up in Claremont, California and attended Claremont schools.  Mr. Lan is a honors graduate of Amherst College in economics and history, a top three national liberal arts university, where he was awarded the John Woodruff Simpson Fellowship in Law in 1998.

He graduated with a Juris Doctor and Master of Business Taxation from the University of Southern California, a top twenty national law school.

Mr. Lan has extensive large transactional experience in estate and gift taxation, income taxation, business entity, and real property taxation, including Proposition 13 reassessment appeals.

Mr. Lan represented clients in all facets of estate planning and elder law, including the preparation of revocable and irrevocable trusts, insurance trusts, qualified personal residence trusts, family limited partnerships, intentionally defective grantor trusts and other grantor trusts, asset protection planning, and the formation and administration of charitable organizations and charitable trusts. Mr. Lan utilized advanced discounting, gifting, and estate freezing strategies, among other planning concepts, as client needs required, while balancing costs, benefits, risks, and family dynamics. Mr. Lan was a certified specialist in estate planning, trust, and probate law from 2010 to 2022.

Additionally, Mr. Lan specialized in trust administration, including preparation of subtrust funding accounts, preparation of estate tax returns and distribution of trust assets. Most importantly, Mr. Lan focused the trustee on fulfilling his or her fiduciary duties to avoid disputes between the trustee and trust beneficiaries.

Mr. Lan also represented clients in conservatorship, probate, and trust litigation in probate court, which represented a large portion of Mr. Lan’s estate and trust practice.

Related to servicing large trusts and estates, and high net worth business owners, Mr. Lan had a substantial general business law practice, representing individuals and businesses in all facets of business, corporate, partnership and real estate law, including acquisition, equity and debt financing and disposition of business and real estate assets in a tax favorable manner, including Section 1031 and 1033 exchanges. Mr. Lan also counseled clients related to litigation in these areas, as a former business litigation attorney for more than 10 years.

Mr. Lan’s success was built on combination of his writing talent, with his experience and judgment, his attention to detail, and his sensitivity to the needs of each client.

Mr. Lan practiced law in the financial district of Downtown Los Angeles and San Francisco at large and mid-sized law practices for 20 years.  Further, Mr. Lan trained and practiced as a tax accountant with PriceWaterhouseCoopers, LLP in San Francisco.
